ClickUp Anchor Tasks and Linking: Pass Codes Down, Roll Totals Up

Link a project, client or job to its work. Render Code Linker passes values such as a project code down to every linked task and rolls hours, cost and progress back up onto the anchor task.

Flat Cost

Links by Rule, Not by Meter.

Values and totals are handled by fixed rules, not by an AI model, so linking work never uses AI credits and there is no AI tier to upgrade to. You see exactly what will happen in a preview before anything is turned on.

  • No AI credits consumed
  • No Make or Zapier license needed
  • No scenarios to build, test or monitor
  • No AI add-on tier to upgrade to

What It Does

ClickUp Anchor and Linking, With Rules You Can See

One task becomes the source of truth for everything linked to it.

Code Linker · · Illustrative

One Anchor Task

Pick a project, client or job as the anchor. Its permanent ClickUp ID is what Render follows, so the code it carries can change freely.

Linked Work You Choose

Link the Lists or Folders that hold the work, include or exclude parts, and decide whether new Lists in a Folder are followed.

Values Down

Pass a project code, client name or date from the anchor to linked tasks. Keep them synchronized, or fill only when blank so nothing is overwritten.

Totals Up

Sum, count, minimum, maximum and completion percentage rolled up onto the anchor, with each task counted once and never from an incomplete read.

Preview First

See the counts, sample rows, blocked rows with reasons and every total with its formula before anything is turned on. The preview writes nothing.

One Owner Per Field

Two links can never fight over the same field. A rival link is refused and tells you which link owns it.

How It Works

How ClickUp Anchor and Linking Works

Set up once in Render. The automation itself stays in ClickUp.

1

Connect and Sync

Connect ClickUp and sync the Lists you want to link.

2

Pick the Anchor and Linked Work

Choose the anchor task, then the Lists or Folders that hold its work and whether to include existing tasks or new ones only.

3

Define Values and Totals

Map the values to pass down, choose the totals to roll up and the statuses that count as finished.

4

Review and Activate

Check the preview, then turn the link on. Pause or archive it at any time.

FAQ

Questions About Code Linker

Not here? Ask us.

Can I change the project code later?

Yes. The link follows the anchor task's permanent ID, not its code, so you can change the code without breaking the link.

Will it overwrite my existing data?

You decide. Fill when blank never overwrites a value that is already there, new-only enrollment leaves existing tasks alone, and values that cannot be matched are blocked, never guessed.

Can two links write the same field?

No. Each field has one owner, enforced by the system, and a rival link is refused with a message naming the owner.

Which field types can it handle?

Text, dropdown, number, currency and date fields. It does not convert between types or currencies, and dropdowns that differ need an option map you approve.

How are totals counted?

Each task counts once. You choose whether to count top-level tasks, leaf tasks or all tasks, the anchor itself is never counted, and a total is never published from an incomplete read.

Does it use AI?

No. Values and totals follow fixed rules, so there are no AI credits to track and the preview matches what will happen.
