ClickUp Custom Task IDs and Automatic Task Numbering

Advanced custom task IDs for ClickUp. The Render Sequencer gives each task a unique, formatted number such as INV-2026-0042 the moment it reaches the status you choose, and writes it back to the task.

Flat Cost

Numbers by Rule, Not by Meter.

Numbers are produced by code, not by an AI model, so numbering a task never uses AI credits and there is no AI tier to upgrade to. Your cost does not rise because you number more tasks with smarter rules, and there is nothing to build, test and monitor in Make or Zapier.

  • No AI credits consumed
  • No Make or Zapier license needed
  • No scenarios to build, test or monitor
  • No AI add-on tier to upgrade to

What It Does

Advanced ClickUp Task Numbering, Built Properly

Everything you need to number work the way your business already does.

Sequencer · · Illustrative

Flexible Patterns

Build numbers from the year, month, day, fiscal year, quarter, task ID or the value of a custom field, with the padding you want, such as PO-2026-00042.

Restart When You Need To

Restart never, yearly, monthly, daily or on your fiscal year. Restarts follow your time zone and need nothing scheduled.

Never a Duplicate

A number is unique for the life of the series. Ask twice for the same task and you get the same number back, so retries are safe.

Test Before You Issue

Test on a real task and see every rule checked and the number it would get, without using one up.

Smart Eligibility

Number only the tasks you mean to: by status, tags, task type, parent or subtask, and a created-after cutoff to leave old work alone.

Write It Back Anywhere

Put the number in a custom field, the task name, a comment, a tag or a status change, whichever your team already looks at.

How It Works

How ClickUp Task Numbering Works

Set up once in Render. The automation itself stays in ClickUp.

1

Connect ClickUp

Link your workspace to Render once, then reuse the connection across every tool.

2

Design the Series

A short wizard takes you through the pattern, padding, start number, restart rule and which tasks qualify.

3

Test, Then Activate

Run a test on a real task, check the preview of the next numbers, then turn the series on.

4

Add the ClickUp Automation

Render gives you the setup steps for a ClickUp automation that calls it when a task reaches the status you chose.

Purchase Order Numbers

A clean PO series issued when a request is approved, with no gaps from manual entry.

Certificate Numbers

Unique certificate and licence numbers that can be printed and verified later.

Work Order and Job Numbers

A reference on every job the moment it is approved, ready for the crew and the customer.

Ticket and Case Numbers

Daily or monthly restarting references for requests, incidents and cases.

Contract and Asset Numbers

Fiscal-year contract numbers and asset or equipment tags that stay consistent.

FAQ

Questions About Sequencer

Not here? Ask us.

Can two tasks get the same number?

No. Each number is allocated in a single step and is unique for the life of the series, even when many tasks are numbered at the same moment.

What happens if the automation fires twice?

The task gets the same number back and nothing is used up, so retries and duplicate triggers are safe.

Can numbers restart every year or month?

Yes. Restart yearly, monthly, daily or on your fiscal year, in your time zone, with nothing to schedule. Include the matching date token in the pattern.

Can I try it without using up numbers?

Yes. Test it on a real task to see which rules passed and which number it would issue. Nothing is spent.

Will it number my old tasks?

Only if you allow it. Choose a created-after cutoff when you set the series up so existing work is left alone.

When should I use this instead of a plain ClickUp custom task ID?

Use the Sequencer when you need more than a prefixed counter: restarts by year or fiscal year, patterns with dates and field values, rules about which tasks qualify, and the number written wherever you want it.
