ClickUp AI Credits Running Out? Keep Them for Work That Needs Thinking
Some of ClickUp's AI features, such as AI Fields and Agents, consume AI Credits, and heavy use can run through a Workspace allowance. A lot of what teams spend AI on, such as numbering, copying values and totalling hours, does not need AI at all. This guide shows what uses credits, and which admin jobs are better done by fixed rules.

What ClickUp Does Today
What You Can Do Natively
Start with the features available on your ClickUp plan.
Brain and Credits Are Different
ClickUp Brain AI is subject to plan limits and a fair use policy. AI Credits are a separate allowance, shared across the Workspace, that premium features such as AI Fields and Agents consume. Credits renew monthly and do not roll over, and some Workspaces see newer plans that include more AI. Check ClickUp's AI limits page for what applies to you.
What Spends Credits
ClickUp lists AI Fields, AI cards, creating tasks from Chat messages, AI Assign and Prioritize, image generation and Agents among the features that consume credits, with Agents using the most per run. Check ClickUp's current table for the amounts.
AI Fields Can Refresh Themselves
AI Fields can fill in on task creation, on existing tasks, and can auto refresh when a task updates. On a busy task a field can run many times, so review the refresh setting on each field.
Know What AI Fields Cannot Do
AI Fields produce text or a choice rather than calculated totals, so they are not a substitute for rollups or numbering.
Where It Falls Short
The Gaps People Run Into
If these are your problem, keep reading.
- Credits are shared across the Workspace and do not roll over, so heavy use early in the month can leave nothing for later.
- Credit use grows with the number of runs and actions, so heavy agent use can use up an allowance quickly.
- Routine admin, such as copying a project code, numbering tasks or totalling hours, does not need a language model, but teams reach for AI because the native tools stop short.
- The Set Custom Field automation only sets a fixed value and cannot copy another field.
- Supported rollup calculations depend on the field and relationship type, and a rollup is a displayed value rather than a stored one, so test whether it can drive an automation.
Worked Example
Example: Where to Spend AI and Where Not To
A quick test: if the result is the same every time and follows a rule, a rule should do it. Keep AI for work that needs judgment.
| Admin Task | Needs AI? | Better Way |
|---|---|---|
| Number tasks as INV-2026-0042 | No | A numbering rule |
| Pass a project code to every subtask | No | Link the work to an anchor task |
| Total hours onto the project | No | Roll totals up by rule |
| Weekly status workbook for each client | No | A scheduled export |
| Summarize a long thread or call | Yes | Use AI, and save credits for this |
| Draft a client update from messy notes | Yes | Use AI, and save credits for this |

How Render and DataFlow Does It
Set It Up Once
Our tools do the repetitive admin by fixed rules. They run without ClickUp AI credits and without any AI model, so your credits stay for work that needs thinking.
List Your Repetitive Admin Jobs
Write down what your team does the same way every time: numbering, copying values, totals and reports.
Number by Rule
Use the Sequencer to give tasks unique, formatted numbers, with restarts you control.
Pass Values Down and Roll Totals Up by Rule
Use Code Linker to pass a project code to linked tasks and roll hours, cost and progress up onto the anchor task.
Schedule Reports and Exports
Use DataFlow to build the weekly or monthly workbook on a schedule instead of asking AI to assemble it.
Review Your AI Fields
Switch off auto refresh on AI Fields that do not need it, and keep AI for summarizing, drafting and other judgment work.
FAQ
Common Questions
Not here? Ask us.
What are ClickUp AI credits?
AI Credits are a monthly allowance, shared across the Workspace, that premium AI features such as AI Fields and Agents consume. They renew each month and do not roll over. Brain usage itself is governed by plan limits and a fair use policy.
How many credits does an AI Field use?
ClickUp publishes an estimate for each feature, and the figures can change. Check ClickUp's AI credits page for the current amount.
What happens when credits run out?
Which features keep working can vary, so test before relying on it. Check ClickUp's current limits page, and see what your plan includes before you rely on AI for routine jobs.
Can I stop AI Fields refreshing automatically?
AI Fields have an auto refresh option that you set per field. Review it on each field so it only runs where it earns its credits.
Do your tools use ClickUp AI credits?
No. Render and DataFlow follow fixed rules and use no AI model, so they do not draw on ClickUp credits or add an AI usage meter.
Should I avoid AI altogether?
No. Use it for summarizing, drafting and analysis, where the answer needs judgment. Just do not spend it on jobs a rule can do the same way every time.
