ClickUp Document Generation: Turn Tasks Into Finished PDFs

ClickUp can print a task or export a Doc, but it has no built-in way to fill a document template from task data. This guide covers the native options, and how teams generate certificates, invoices and reports straight from tasks.

What ClickUp Does Today

What You Can Do Natively

Start with the features available on your ClickUp plan.

Print a Task to PDF

Open the task, choose Print from its menu, and set the browser destination to Save as PDF. This works in the web app only.

Export a Doc

ClickUp Docs export to PDF, Markdown, HTML or Print, for one page or all pages. Embedded content is not included.

Doc Templates

You can save Docs and pages as templates and apply them again.

ClickUp Brain

Brain can create a Doc from an answer it gives about a task. Access may depend on your plan and add-ons.

Where It Falls Short

The Gaps People Run Into

If these are your problem, keep reading.

  • Printing a task gives you the task screen, not a formatted certificate, invoice or letter.
  • Docs are written by hand, so values from custom fields have to be copied in.
  • There is no document number, QR code or way for someone else to check a printed copy is genuine.
  • No built-in step attaches the finished file back to the task.
  • No mail-merge style feature turned up in ClickUp's documentation.

Worked Example

Example: A Completion Certificate

Values come from the task's fields. The document is built, attached to the task and recorded automatically.

How Render Does It

Set It Up Once

Render builds the document from the task data and puts the result back where your team works.

1

Connect and Create an Output

Connect ClickUp, then create an output and give it a name.

2

Choose Where It Applies

Pick the statuses, task types or tags that should produce a document.

3

Map the Fields and Design the Page

Match each document field to a task value, a custom field or a computed value. Upload your own PDF, PNG or JPEG as the page, or lay it out from scratch, and add a QR code if you want copies to be verifiable.

4

Preview, Then Choose What Goes Back

Preview with awkward sample data, then choose to attach the PDF, write the verification link to a field, add a comment and set a status.

5

Add the ClickUp Automation

Build a ClickUp automation that calls the output's webhook address when a task reaches the status you chose, and run it once on a real task to test.

FAQ

Common Questions

Not here? Ask us.

Can ClickUp generate a PDF from task data?

ClickUp has no built-in feature that fills a formatted document from task data. You can print a task to PDF from the browser, or export a Doc.

Can Render produce Word documents?

No. Render produces PDFs. It can use your own PDF, PNG or JPEG as the page design, but not Word or Google Docs templates.

Does Render email the document?

No. Render attaches the file to the task and can write a verification link, a comment and a status. Emailing is not part of Render.

Can it read the time tracked on a task?

It can use the task's total time estimated and time tracked. It does not read individual time entries or comments.

Can someone verify a printed document?

Yes, with a QR code. It opens a public page showing valid, revoked or expired, with the reference number and dates. It never shows the document's contents.

Does the document change if I edit the task later?

No. Values are saved when the document is made. A genuine change followed by a new run creates a new version, and the old one is kept.
