Slack and ClickUp: Turn Messages into Tasks Without the Noise

ClickUp has a native Slack integration. Slack can create tasks, including from a message, and ClickUp can post updates to channels. It is two-way in action but not a full sync. This guide covers what it does and the configuration we build so channels stay useful rather than noisy.

What ClickUp Does Today

What You Can Do Natively

Start with the features available on your ClickUp plan.

Native Slack App

ClickUp lists Slack as a native integration, connected through your Workspace settings.

Create Tasks From Slack

A slash command opens a task creator, and you can turn a Slack message into a task from the message menu.

Channel Notifications

You can choose which events post to a channel, such as task created, status changed, new comment, new attachment, assignee changes and mentions.

Not a Full Sync

Slack creates tasks and ClickUp posts updates, but task data is not kept in sync with message threads.

Where It Falls Short

The Gaps People Run Into

If these are your problem, keep reading.

  • Too many notification types in a busy channel turn into noise that people mute.
  • Slash commands vary, so check what your version supports.
  • Private channels and permissions need testing, because who can see a task and who can see the channel may differ.
  • Check the plan limits that apply to the integration in your Workspace.
  • Replies in Slack threads are not the same as ClickUp comments, so context can split across two places.

Worked Example

Example: Notification Plan

One channel per purpose keeps updates readable. Values are illustrative.

ChannelEvents PostedAudience
#projects-updatesStatus changed, task createdProject managers
#support-escalationsTask created, comment addedSupport and engineering
#client-acmeStatus changed onlyAccount team
Direct messagesAssigned and mentionedIndividuals
NoneAttachments and every commentMuted by design

Sample data for illustration.
