Zapier, Make or n8n with ClickUp: Choosing the Right Automation Layer

Zapier, Make and n8n all have ClickUp connectors, built by those platforms rather than ClickUp. They differ mainly in how they charge: Zapier by task, Make by credit and n8n by workflow execution, with a self-hosted Community Edition option. This guide covers the trade-offs, the ClickUp API limits that apply to all of them, and the configuration we build and monitor.

What ClickUp Does Today

What You Can Do Natively

Start with the features available on your ClickUp plan.

Zapier

Large app library and the quickest start. Pricing counts tasks, so multi-step flows at volume can grow costly.

Make

A visual scenario builder with ClickUp modules for tasks, Lists, Folders and Spaces. It bills in credits, driven by the operations your scenarios run, and polling triggers use operations even with no new data.

n8n

A workflow tool that counts one execution per whole run. A self-hosted Community Edition exists with no execution cap, though you carry hosting and maintenance. Cloud plans are priced by executions.

ClickUp API Limits

Requests are limited per token by plan: about 100 per minute on lower plans, 1,000 on Business Plus and 10,000 on Enterprise, with a 429 response when exceeded.

Where It Falls Short

The Gaps People Run Into

If these are your problem, keep reading.

  • Polling triggers add delay, and webhook triggers are usually better when available.
  • Retries and polling can create duplicate tasks without a check.
  • Custom field mapping is fiddly and breaks when fields are renamed.
  • Costs can surprise you at volume, in different ways on each platform.
  • ClickUp webhooks are suspended after repeated failures, so a flow can stop receiving events without anyone noticing.

FAQ

Common Questions

Not here? Ask us.

Which is best for ClickUp, Zapier, Make or n8n?

It depends on volume, skills and budget. Zapier is quickest to start, Make is flexible and n8n can be self-hosted.

How do their prices differ?

Zapier counts tasks, Make bills in credits and n8n counts workflow executions. We do not quote prices, and we model your expected volume on each.

What are the ClickUp API limits?

They are per token and depend on plan, with a 429 response when exceeded.

Why did my flow stop receiving events?

ClickUp suspends a webhook after repeated failures, so it needs checking and reactivating.

Can ClickUp Automations replace these tools?

For logic inside ClickUp, often yes. For other systems you need an integration.

When is a custom build cheaper?

When volume makes per-run fees high, or you need exact control of retries and IDs.
